Q:  Why do Catholics hate Gay & Lesbians?

A. This is a very contraversial question.  Or is it? The simple asnwer is…They don’t.

I’ll share a personal story first.  I was driving one day as I was listening to the radio and they were speaking about the homosexual marriage controversy. A man who was obviously very upset came on and declared that Christians either “hated them or didn’t understand them”.  This really made me think.

For one thing, I don’t consider myself a biggot and definately don’t hate them.  I’ve had and have friends that are gay.  They are welcome in my house and I would treat them with the same dignity and respect as anyone else.

So does that mean I don’t understand them? Well, I’ve had sexual desire before and have both given in and obstained.  I’ve been in relationships condemned and condoned by God. I’m human as they are and have temptation all the same.  As they have premarital relationships, so had I. So do I understand them.  I believe I do.

So why then do I feel that the homosexual lifestyle is wrong to the core.  Why am I so opposed to it?

Well, in short, because I believe and follow the Sacred Word of God.  Whether I agree or not, like something or not, I follow the Bible. One may like pre-marital sex and it may be perfectly legal.  You may even be President and take advantage of your position of authority and have sexual relations with an intern and that may be legal.  But that doesn’t mean it is morally right and not a sin in Gods eyes. Does this mean I’m a saint? No, I am a sinner as well as I mentioned.  So I’m not opposed to homosexuality because of who they are, how they were “made” or how they act (if any different) but because the Bible says it is a sin.  I am just as opposed to pornography even though that is legal.  I am just as opposed to pre-marital sex, adultry … etc.

Below is some relavant scripture but more important than proving a point that homosexuality is not allowed, it shows that it is a sin. And just like any other sin, sin seperates us from God.  I needed to connect the dots and know why I felt the lifestyle was wrong.  Here it is…

     1. God made us in His own image.

     2. He would want none of us to parish. (go to hell)

     3. He made and commands us to Love one another

     4. We are to spread the Gospel

1. Anything that seperates man from god should be anethema to a Christian.

2. Since we are made in Gods image and He wants none of us to be lost, then naturally we do not want any of our brothers or sisters to be lost.

3. Because we must love one another, we want everyone to be saved and have eternal life and if anything (including homosexuality) gets in the way of our brothers and sisters eternal life, we must be opposed.

4. Because we are commanded to spread the Gospel and the teachings of God, we must do everything in our power to always promote (not by force or by hatred) Gods laws with LOVE and Compassion.  We must always treat others as we would want to be treated. So it is out of LOVE for our seperated brothers and sisters that we are opposed to homosexuality.

1 Cor 6:9 (From Dictionary: Noun 1. sodomite – someone who engages in anal copulation (especially a male who engages in anal copulation with another male)

9 Do you not realise that people who do evil will never inherit the kingdom of God? Make no mistake — the sexually immoral, idolaters, adulterers, the self-indulgent, sodomites,

10 thieves, misers, drunkards, slanderers and swindlers, none of these will inherit the kingdom of God.

1 Tim 1:8-10

8 We are well aware that the Law is good, but only provided it is used legitimately,

9 on the understanding that laws are not framed for people who are upright. On the contrary, they are for criminals and the insubordinate, for the irreligious and the wicked, for the sacrilegious and the godless; they are for people who kill their fathers or mothers and for murderers,

10 for the promiscuous, homosexuals, kidnappers, for liars and for perjurers — and for everything else that is contrary to the sound teaching

Rom 1:24-28

24 That is why God abandoned them in their inmost cravings to filthy practices of dishonouring their own bodies-

25 because they exchanged God’s truth for a lie and have worshipped and served the creature instead of the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.

26 That is why God abandoned them to degrading passions:

27 why their women have exchanged natural intercourse for unnatural practices; and the men, in a similar fashion, too, giving up normal relations with women, are consumed with passion for each other, men doing shameful things with men and receiving in themselves due reward for their perversion.

28 In other words, since they would not consent to acknowledge God, God abandoned them to their unacceptable thoughts and indecent behaviour.

Lv 20:13-15 Although this is part of the (Old Law) it still is put in context with other “hateful” or “abomination” sins before God.

13 “The man who has intercourse with a man in the same way as with a woman: they have done a hateful thing together; they will be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.

14 “The man who marries a woman and her mother: this is incest. They will be burnt alive, he and they; you will not tolerate incest.

15 “The man who has intercourse with an animal will be put to death; you will kill the animal too.

Lv 18:22

22 “You will not have intercourse with a man as you would with a woman. This is a hateful thing.

23 “You will not have intercourse with any kind of animal; you would become unclean by doing so. Nor will a woman offer herself to an animal, to have intercourse with it. This would be a violation of nature.

24 “Do not make yourselves unclean by any of these practices, for it was by such things that the nations that I am driving out before you made themselves unclean.

So in the end, we know that the lifestyle is not according to Gods will and anything that goes against His will is sinful.  We are not to judge however.  We never know why people do the things they do.  We can disagree with someone but God did give them free will.  As long as they are not hurting someone else spiritually or physically, then gays and lesbians will be judged according to Gods will.

What we are called to do is to love them.  As the saying goes, point a finger and 3 point back at you.  Take the plank out of your own eye before pointing out the splinter in your brothers.  The golden rule says “love one another as I have loved you”.  Treat others the way you would want to be treated. What if your brother, sister, son or daughter was gay? Show the compassion and love Jesus showed for all sinners, Catholics and non-Catholics alike, gay or straight, He came for all of us.  He didn’t come for the healthy, He came for the sick.  As for me, I would never want to cast the first stone…or the second or third for that matter.  Always share the spirit of Christ within you to all.

“Always be prepared to make a defense to anyone who calls you to account for the hope that is in you”

1 Peter 3:15
