Q: Why do Catholics kneel before & worship statues & idols?

A: We don’t.  Allow me to explain.  First, we must establish the following: Do Catholics worship Mary and the Saints? (please click here)

Next, It is important to know that it is very dangerous to take scripture out of context.  Even Satan did this but Jesus defended himself by knowing scripture himself and proclaiming the Truth…

(Mat 4:7) Jesus said to him, “On the other hand, it is written, ‘Thou shalt not put the Lord your God to the test.'”
(Luk 4:12) 12 But Jesus answered him, ‘Scripture says: Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’

So when you hear someone preach falsely and misquote scripture from the pulpit, you must discern the truth.  Back in the days of the Old Testament, pagans and even Moses and Gods own chosen fell to this type of worship.  They would actually melt gold and make images of cows, birds, snakes etc. and worship those statues as their gods.

(Exodus 32) Aaron’s golden calf
“Aaron said to them, Break off the golden earrings, which are in the ears of your wives, of your sons, and of your daughters, and bring them unto me … And … he had made it a molten calf.”

So God told Moses to go down to his people with the ten commandments..

(Exodus 20: 3-5)

3 Do not have any other gods before me.

4 You shall not make for yourself an idol, whether in the form of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.

5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, punishing children for the iniquity of parents, to the third and the fourth generation of those who reject me,

Do you really believe that Catholics think these statues of Jesus, Mary or the Saints are gods and we bow down to worship them?  Be careful, the enemy always twists the truth and would love Christians to argue amongst themselves. These statues are merely representations of people we love, our fellow brothers and sisters that sacrificed themselves for our Lord.  Think of statues not as idols but as pictures in your wallet or on your desk.  You may look at a picture of your brother, sister, mother or father living or deceased and you may even go as far as to kiss the picture and whisper I love you or I miss you.

So we Catholics choose to honor Mary and the Saints and would rather have a statue honoring their devotion to Jesus Christ rather than building a statue honoring some general in a war that killed thousands of enemy soldiers. We kneel before them not in worship but in respect and honor just as one would before a bride before they ask for her hand in marriage or before royalty.

Who would be the only one to gain if we were not to honor our departed brothers and sisters that gave their life for Jesus and whom by their witness and testimony left here on earth are still leading people to Christ?
